Meet the founders of Monroe County Martial Arts

Steve Scott began his martial arts training in Hawaii in 1973. Tired of the usual physical education classes taught at the Punahou School, he signed up for an elective karate class taught in conjunction with the Karate Association of Hawaii. His first class, taught by Shotokan Master Ken Funakoshi, quickly hooked him on the martial arts.

While working towards a degree in journalism and English at Indiana University he studied Tae Kwon Do, eventually earning his black belt from Grand Master Duke Lee in 1978. In 1986 he was awarded his black belt in Hapkido and his black belt in Modern Arnis in 1995.

Mr. Scott has taught martial arts for several schools and clubs in the Bloomington, Indiana area. He also taught Tae Kwon Do and close combat tactics while serving as an infantry officer in the United States Marine Corps.

In addition to his role as chief instructor at M.C.M.A, he is the director of youth martial arts at the Monroe County Y.M.C.A.

Mr. Scott incorporates a unique sense of humor in his teaching. He believes in the traditional values of respect, discipline, and hard work, but also stresses that martial arts should be fun.  He currently holds the rank of 6th degree black belt in Tae Kwon Do.

Linda Scott began her training in Tae Kwon Do in 1987 and currently holds the rank of fourth degree black belt. She has a Master of Science degree in education from Indiana University and has taught in the Monroe County schools since 1984.

Mrs. Scott is a former competitor on the North American Sport Karate Association tournament circuit. Before retiring, she managed to become NASKA’s regional champion in her black belt forms division.

In addition to her teaching duties at M.C.M.A, Mrs. Scott is the program director and manager for the school. She is a tireless worker, and is the main reason for the school’s huge success.

Mr. and Mrs. Scott were married in their karate uniforms and cut their cake with a samurai sword. They opened Monroe County Martial Arts in November of 1991.
